Supporting inquiries

Supporting question 1

What is a virtue? Why is/are virtue(s) important in life?

Formative performance task

Students read each of the chapters in “The Lakota Way” about virtues (#1-12) and keep a journal as they read. After reading each chapter, students write a summary of the virtue and the example that was given in the story. Then, students write about their personal examples of this virtue in their life- something they have done/something that was done for them. Students can also include drawings in their journal if they wish. Journal entries can be shared with the class.

Summative performance task · Argument

Which one of these virtues do you feel is most important? Why? In a paragraph, explain which virtue you feel is most valuable to society and why. Is there only one, or are they connected? How could our world improve if everyone focused on ONE virtue?

Extension

Why does the book begin with the virtue “Humility”? If you were to reorder the virtues, which virtue would you start with? Which would be your second, third… ? Create a poster placing the virtues in order of your beliefs. Include a picture and story/example from your life experiences with each virtue.

Taking informed action

What can you do to promote these virtues in your classroom/school? Each week, choose one virtue to focus on and find ways to carry out that behavior. Record your actions and how people reacted to you.
