Staging the question
What changes have you seen during your lifetime that have presented challenges? Does who we are
affect how we handle change? How do people learn to grow and adapt to overcome challenges?

Supporting question 1
Do all people react to challenges in the
same way? What causes them to react
in the ways that they do?
Formative performance task
Do a close read of Golpe de Estado.
Look for places in the story that the
main character has to overcome
challenges. Create one side of a T
chart that outlines the challenges and
how he handles them.
Then, look at how a different
character overcomes the same
challenges. Compare and contrast the
two people’s actions in the other side
of the T chart.

Put yourself in the middle, then
think of at least one challenge
you’ve had to overcome in life.
Write out things that you thought
about while faced with that
challenge. Then write things you
talked about during the challenge,
followed by things you felt while it
was happening. Finally, write about
what you did during and after the
challenge.

Summative performance task · Argument
With a group of up to 4 people, create a children’s book that depicts a story of
someone facing a challenge in life. Use information from the story we read, the video
we watched, and your personal experiences to make it realistic. Show how the main
character finds a way to balance identity and resiliency to overcome the challenge that
he or she faces. The story should be 10 pages long. Use
https://storybird.com/classes/making-meaning-7th-grade/ to create the story book.
Extension
Research stories of children like the little boys or the little girl that the main character
from Golpe de Estado helped. Find out if there are programs that can help those
children. If there are none, create a plan for a program that could help those children
overcome challenges wherever they may live. If there are programs to help them,
write about which program you think is the most valuable and why that would help
the children be resilient.
Taking informed action
Start each day with positive self-affirmations. Affirm who you are, what you are proud of, and that
you are valuable each and every day.
