Formative performance task
Before reading Death of the Iron Horse,

After watching, students will journal

Supporting question 3
How does the relationship between the
connection to earth and the expansion
of technology affect us today?
Formative performance task
Make an outline of your typical day.
Mark how often you interact with
technology. Then mark how often you
interact with earth, nature, and other
people. Journal briefly if you feel that
you have good balance with these
things.
Create a medicine wheel that depicts a balance between interconnectedness with
other people and earth and the incorporation of machines and technology in our
world today. Focus on the balance that you want to find as you finish middle
school and high school. When you’re done with the balance portion, write a
concluding statement that explains why you feel this is the best balance.
Extension
Conduct research on other times that technology was introduced to a new society
that was unfamiliar with it. Compare and contrast these events with the
introduction of the locomotive to the Native people. Address causes and effects in
the compare and contrast.
Taking informed action
Replace one activity that you normally do on technology each day this week with a walk in nature,
a conversation in person with a friend, or an outdoor activity.
